There is no option to have a custom logo. Personally, I feel that when someone stop by my DotTel I like them to see my custom logo rather than the existing default .Tel Logo.

I bet any company would be interested in showing off their brand image rather than having the default DotTel logo. Companies spend fortune on branding.

Custom or Multiple layouts:

Again, there is no option to have a different background. The least Telnic could do is to have a set of templates where the DotTel owners have an option to select from these available options. Personally I want my DotTel to have a white background with custom logo with which people at least can recognise immediately where they landed on

I have no clue why they have set “Keywords” as the section heading for the sub-sections like Business Address and so on.

Practically it does not look professional to have the “Keywords” as section heading for Address part.

Either there should be an option to edit the text “Keywords” to the one that user prefers or the Business Address sub-section must be moved out of this keywords section.

Bottom line:

Whatever DotTel target market is, majority of the people prefer to have unique logo & background. May be these can be restricted to size and dimensions, but there is a real need of these features.

Communication channels like myspace, facebook and todays Twitter, all provide profile customisation Tools. Lets hope Telnic provides some level of personalization on visual aspects and the way content is sorted/displayed on DotTel, for example the one that I have mentioned above.

Share your thoughts on this..

New dashboard features for controlling your .tel domain

New function for the folder part of the .tel dashboard:

Changing names of subdomains:

Excursion:
About foders:

Folders functionality expands the navigation capability of your .tel domain.

If you have a lot of contact points, you probably want to spread them on several pages. This will provide a better visibility of your contact details in mobile devices with small displays. In this case, you should use the Folders option to logically group the contact information – like business details, favorite links, social media sites, professional information and more.
Technically, a folder is a sub-domain of your .tel domain. You can set a direct link to it.
Entering your folder name:
Enter the folder name. You can enter only letters, digits and hyphens in the subfolder name. A subfolder must contain at least one letter and its minimum length is 3 characters. The links to the folder in a browser will have initial capital letters and any hyphens will be converted to spaces. For example "my-business" will be visualized as "My Business". Once you are ready click on the Save button.
The Dashboard will only show the first level of sub-folders. If you want to view a deeper folder level, click on the corresponding subfolder. The contact information under the subfolders can be managed in the same way as under the main fodler.

End of Excursion.

Telnic has included a few more functions for de folders part of the dashboard:
They are only minor changes, but they can simplyfie handling nevertheless.

One is now able to change the the names of the subdomains at one single area of the dashboard.

When you hover with the mouse over the list of subdomains, you get to see icons, such a a pencil and a waste bin, with which you are able to do the different tasks.

You have to be very careful, with the deleting function:
In order to delete a folder, hover the mouse over its name and click on the Delete link. By deleting a folder you will permanently remove all of its sub-folders, the contact details and the corresponding items.
Accidentically deleting can have some serious consequenses...
Therefore, it would be wise, to have backuped the .tel domain before (for example, by using the .tel tool tel-machine, and its backup function).

New function for the .tel dashboard:

Changing the title of your .tel domain:

Till now, the domain name on the TelProxy of a .tel domain was quasi „given“, and pre configured, and corresponded with the name of the domain.

Now you are able to customise that title/name, and have 255 characters provided.
Which allows you to make a extensive title for your TelProxy.

According to the complexity of your title, the font size will be automatically adapted.
For each 10 character words, there will oviously be a own CSS tag: One for maximum 10 characters, one for 20 characters, one for 30 characters, and so forth...
The longer the title, the more the font size shrinks,
Furthermore, there will be implemented a sub title, with the same name, as your domain name.

Because the title of a TelProxy is important for search engines, as well: with this possibility, you have another SEO option, respectively, more SEO potential.

New function for the .tel dashboard:

New contact types:

The list of contact types, has been extended, as well, here:
Telnic only mentioned, that there is a new type of „user“...:
With this option, one should be able to, for example, deposit his username for online services or games, and can add a short comment, as well.

I did notice, when I over saw eveything, that there is also a typ, so called „Info“: Either, I had over seen that, up and till now, or it had been added, as new, as well.

For me, this typ is so far of interest, because one can integrate further text in to a .tel domain, with this. This text (maximum 255 characters) can be displayed on the TelProxy, according to your preferences.
With this feature, you have another option: next to integrating keywords, to integrate text on the TelPoxy.

Advertisements within .tel, with "TEL-Advert": A extension tool of TEL-MACHINE.

Dot Tel News:

Advertisements within .tel, with "TEL-Advert": A extension tool of TEL-MACHINE.

TEL-MACHINE.com is offering a new tool extension for its users: TEL-Advert.

In August, Telnic presented a new format for advertising within .tel domains:

With help of this extension, Telcic allows every .tel domain owner to create advertisements on his TelProxy.

This was difficult to achieve, because of technical restrictions.

The TEL-MACHINE team has taken a closer look at that feature, and recognized, that there would be more technical skills needed to achieve the task, than the average .tel user has.
Respectively, Telnic assumes, that the users that want to set up their ads, have enough technical knowledge and skills, to be abel to read, understand, and follow their instructions for advertisements within .tel, as well as to be able to achieve the task.

Fact is, that a majority of .tel domain users, are lacking those skills. Therefore, the team of TEL-MACHINE has decided, within reasonable time, to make a extension tool to integrate in to TEL-MACHINE.

1.)
The handling of this extension tool „TEL-Advert“, is very simple:
In a first step, you create your advertisement:
Next to the information about title, the text of the ad, the URI, as well as the URI label, you can also use as many key words, as you like.

2.)
Furthermore, you have the possibility to activate a payment process, where you can give in a price per click, according to your requirements.

3.)
In a second step, you are able to set the positon for your ad on your TelProxy, via „drag and drop“.

4.)
Also, you are able to define, on which of your .tel domains, you would like to have the advertisement displayed.

5.)
In addition, one can choose, if one only wants to have ads displayed, on single subdomains, or on all existing domains.

6.)
Furthermore, one is able to select from a bigger choice from advertisment types, such as standard advertisment types, or a modus by random selection, and switch between both choices.

Example:
Within the header area, according to the Telnic options, you can only have maximum 2 advertisements displayed.
But, with the new method, if you simply select a bigger amount ads for the advertisement fields, and display them in the header area, then the advertisement will show up on your TelProxy according to to „automatic random selection“.

7.)
After all advertisements have been created and displayed, it takes about twenty five minutes, till the advertisements are visible on the TelProxy.

A process, which would go quicker, is not possible, due to technical reasons.

With this system, you are also able to modifye, deactivate, or delete a selected advertisement.

Conclusion:

The extension tool for TEL-MACHINE: „TEL-Advert“, completes the pre-existing services of .tel domain tools of TEL-MACHINE.com.
There will be more functions to be added to TEL-MACHINE, soon.

Comments:

This is a official Newsletter from the developers of TEL-MACHINE, and has been translated by Alexander Schiesser, developer and owner of Telcommerce.biz, a commercial .tel domain name directory.

Thank you, for your kind attention.

How to advertise within .tel (Click here)

The Dot Tel Developer

Live Example:

http://www.hotele.tel

Update:

1.) Download Telhosting_Client.php from the Telnic developer site.

2.) Use a PHP code to enter a TXT ad, according to the sample PHP code.

3.) Insert PHP code / advertisement TXT record in Telhosting_Client.php.?
Insert username and password (for your client.wsdl file), as well as your domain name,
within the adverstisement TXT record PHP code:

4.) NOTE: THIS USES A LOCAL client.wsdl FILE AS EXPLAINED IN THE
Telhosting_Client.php DOCS
$config = array();
$config['login'] = 'INSERT_USERNAME_HERE';
$config['password'] = 'INSERT_PASSWORD_HERE';
$config['wsdl'] = './client.wsdl';
$domain = 'mydomain.tel'

Follow the instructions in the Telhosting_Client.php script:
With PHP, you MUST download the client.wsdl file from your provider, modify it a little bit, and then things will go fine. This information is contained at the top o the Telhosting_Client.php script.:

* 1. Download the client WSDL from YOUR registrar, save it in the same directory as this file and name the downloaded file: client.wsdl
*
* 1.5 Don't know where your registrar put the WSDL file? Open an command-line client on UNIX and write: dig _soap._nspapi.yourdomain.tel naptr where you replace yourdomain with your actual domain. Then take either the http or https url and append to it "?wsdl" (so it will end in "...client?wsdl")
* That's the url for your registrar's WSDL file.
*
* 2. Edit client.wsdl -- find the string: "http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap/bindings/HTTP/" and replace it by: "http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/http". If you don't do that, PHP will throw a fatal error: "SOAP-ERROR: Parsing WSDL: PHP-SOAP doesn't support transport 'http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap/bindings/HTTP/'".

Example:

Domain:

stead.tel

Ad:

Plumber
24 Hour Fast Response Plumbers
10% Book Online Discount Today!
xwww.ReactFast.co.uk/Plumbers

Preparation:

IN TXT ".tad" "1" "1" "51"
"Advert Title" "Plumber"
"label" "www.ReactFast.co.uk/Plumbers"
"uri" "http://www.reactfast.co.uk" "uri" "=243423543&z=42342343"
"desc" "24 Hour Fast Response Plumbers" "desc" "10% Book Online Discount
Today !"

".tad":
Is the suffix for the text ad, within the ad record.

'owner' => '_ad':
An advertisment is a TXT record with the '.tad' prefix, placed in the '_ad sub-domain' of the current domain, such as '_ad.mybusiness.tel'.
To store a ad record in the '_ad' folder, set its owner within the syntax of the ad record correctly to owner="_ad". This way, you don't need to create a folder separately.

Numbers:
"1" stands for 'version, currently "1" ', the other "1" stands for "displayed at top of the page", and "51" acts as the sort order for each display set.

Label:
Text string up to 255 bytes long. It is the anchor text of the below URI.

URI: Points to the product of the ad.

According to sample PHP code:

----------------

include('Telhosting_Client.php');
$ad = array(
'text' => array('.tad', '1',
'1', '51',
'Advert Title', 'Plumbers',
'label', 'www.ReactFast.co.uk/Plumbers',
'uri', 'http://www.reactfast.co.uk',
'uri', '=243423543&z=42342343',
'desc', "24 Hour Fast Response Plumbers\nLine 2 of",
'desc', "10% Book Online Discount
Today !"),
'profiles' => '_all_',
'owner' => '_ad'
);
// Config
// NOTE: THIS USES A LOCAL client.wsdl FILE AS EXPLAINED IN THE Telhosting_Client.php DOCS
$config = array();
$config['login'] = 'INSERT_USERNAME_HERE';
$config['password'] = 'INSERT_PASSWORD_HERE';
$config['wsdl'] = './client.wsdl';
$domain = 'stead.tel';

// Initialize our client
$client = new Telhosting_client($config);
// Insert some data
$client->store_record($domain, 'txt', $ad);
?>
----------------

---------------
Update:

An advertisment is a TXT record with the '.tad' prefix, placed in the '_ad sub-domain' of the current domain, such as '_ad.mybusiness.tel'.

The syntax of the ad record, is specified by an XML schema.

To be able to advertise within your .tel, you need "internal SOAP API" from your .tel registrar / provider:
SOAP is a simple XML-based protocol that allows applications to exchange information over HTTP.
HTTP + XML = SOAP
Or more simply: SOAP is a protocol for accessing a web service.

To be able to advertise within your .tel, you need the client.wsdl file from your .tel registrar / provider:
WSDL bindings defines the message format and protocol details for a web service.

To store a ad record in the '_ad' folder, set its owner within the syntax of the ad record correctly to owner="_ad". This way, you don't need to create a folder separately:

typ:storeRecordRequest domainName="mybusiness.tel"
typ:txt profiles="_all_" owner="_ad"

But: the TelHosting control panel won't support ad management. You have to inserted your ad by using the APIs,

Telnic Ltd. provides a Java-based TelHosting Software application. This application interacts with the DNS directly, and exposes a publicly available web service, using SOAP over HTTP as its protocol. Client applications implementing this SOAP interface can work with the TelHosting Software application to perform all .tel-related operations.

In addition to the client service API, the TelHosting Software exposes an internal API for administration purposes.

To be able to advertise within your .tel, you need "internal SOAP API", as well as client.wsdl file from your .tel registrar / provider, and then modify the file a little bit:

Find the string: "http://www.w3.org/2003/05/soap/bindings/HTTP/" and replace it by: "http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/http".

Edit the TelHosting class: look for: $config['wsdl'] (around line 173) and set the variable to: "./client.wsdl" instead of the full URL.

And now, you can insert your ad records by using the APIs.

And your advertisement should show up, on your TelProxy.
.
It may be complecated, but that is how it is:
Currently, you can choose between doing it your self, or going to mytel.me. and use the tool, which is offered to use, and which is free.

The guys from Jepaa, will soon come up with a solution, which you will be able to find within TEL-MACHINE,

----------------------

FINAL CONCLUSION FOR ADVERTISING WITHIN .TEL:

1.) You must use SOAP with 'storeRecord' for adding TXT ('.tad') with '_ad' as
owner.

2.) To be able to use SOAP: download the client.wsdl file from your provider, modify it a little bit.

3.) Save it in the same directory as the Telhosting_Client.php script, and name the downloaded file: client.wsdl.

4.) Edit client.wsdl, according to the Telhosting_Client.php script.
If if your PHP hasn''t SSL support: try to use:
telhosting.domainmonster.com/client?wsdl=1 , with the http:// infront.

5.) Create Advertisement TXT records for your .tel domain, according to the following syntax:

Example Advert:
Plumber
24 Hour Fast Response Plumbers
10% Book Online Discount Today!
xwww.ReactFast.co.uk/Plumbers

Syntax:

typ:storerecordrequest domainname=" stead.tel"
typ:txt profiles="_all_" owner="_ad"
typ:text>.tadtyp:text>1typ:text>1typ:text>51typ:text>Plumbertyp:text>xwww.ReactFast.co.uk/Plumberstyp:text>xxxx://www.reactfast.co.uk=243423543&z=42342343typ:text>typ:text>desctyp:text>24 Hour Fast Response Plumberstyp:text>desctyp:text>10% Book Online Discount Today !/typ:txt
/typ:storerecordrequest

Scheme:

storeRecordRequest for Domain Name
Folder
Suffix
Position (Display Preference)
Location
Sort Sequence
Title
.
.
Etc.

.
----------------

Angenommen, Du möchtest folgendes Inserat auf Deine TelProxy plazieren (Und angenommen, Du hast noch kein \"Internal SOAP API\" von Deinem ISP):

Plumber
24 Hour Fast Response Plumbers
10% Book Online Discount Today!
www.ReactFast.co.uk/Plumbers

Dann gehst Du wie folgt vor:
.

http://dev.telnic.org/trac/browser/apps/php/trunk

2.) Du erstellst für Dein Inserat einen Datensatz mit einer ählichen Syntax, wie:

typ:storerecordrequest domainname="\"meinefirma.tel\""
typ:txt profiles="\"_all_\"" owner="\"_ad\""
typ:text>.tadtyp:text>1typ:text>1typ:text>51typ:text>Inseratentiteltyp:text>Labeltyp:text>Link zum Produkttyp:text>Zeilenumbruchtyp:text>Dein Inseratentexttyp:text>Zeilenumbruchtyp:text>Dein Inseratentext/typ:txt
/typ:storerecordrequest
.

Wie finde ich das \"Internal SOAP API\"?:

Each registrar has its own Telhosting platform, and therefore its own SOAP API entrypoint. You can find the SOAP entrypoints in http and https for your domain by simply querying the NAPTR records for:

_soap._nspapi.[YOUR-DOMAIN].tel

This is called \"autoprovisioning\", and you can use it to automagically find the right SOAP API entrypoints. Similarly, you can find the web interface (and therefore JSON) entrypoints with:

_web._nspapi.[YOUR-DOMAIN].tel

Please use your correct API url, it should work.

Here\'s an example in PHP of how to find a domain\'s SOAP API entrypoint, otherwise called \"autoprovisioning\":

The new way to communicate

Welcome to Telcommerce Global .Tel Online Directory Services.

Samstag, 5. September 2009

10 Reasons to list your business with Telcommerce Directory

1. Join the global online directory that provides instant local and global exposure.

2. Integrate all your means of communication in a single place.

3. We instantly update and manage contact information and keywords in real time.

4. Increase your online presence through search engine visibility.

5. Provide a fast way for your customers to connect with you in a single click from a computer or any pocket device which connects to the internet including mobile phones. A .tel domain is an online registry, so it's a great way for businesses to have an online presence whether or not they already have a standard website.

6. The technology behind .tel allows for the data to load much quicker than other domains including .com making it ideal for pocket internet surfing devices. This will become industry standard and has been commissioned with the future growth of the internet in mind. This project has undertaken nine years of development before being launched.

7. Each category in our .tel registry will only list twenty companies. Other registries and phone books give the consumer a large choice within the particular areas which dilutes the number of enquiries you might receive.

8. Most of our names are generic 'type in' names so will naturally see high volumes of traffic.

9. If a customer accesses your details using a mobile phone, with just one click, the phone will automatically dial your number. Additionally customers are given the option to save your details as a business card directly within their mobile phone or pc phonebook, making repeat business highly likely.

10. Increases your business's discoverability online as we continually update the multi-lingual keywords for each location and category. Due to the simplicity, pre-optimised structure and size of a .tel folder, they are known as "google juice". A .tel domain has a unique advantage over normal websites as the structure is easily optimised to rank highly by leading search engines, including Google and Yahoo.

You've always wanted a Web site, but didn't have time or money to set one up.

For all those who have trouble setting up a Web site (individuals, small businesses) because of budget and time contraints, .tel is a pretty good service to quickly display and manage securely an online presence without a Webpage. Not only that, you save all costs and time spent associated with changing the postal address, telecom operators, ISPs, etc. (UK example).

.tel has the potential to replace all directories.

And it's global, as opposed to a fragmented service like Yellow Pages. With the "friendly functionality", hell, it may even give Facebook a good run for its money!

Your dot tel web presence in a .tel directoy

This innovative tool enables companies and individuals to be reached from any internet-enabled device. It offers an integrated solution for all your communication listings; email, phone, fax, premium numbers, call centres, IVR systems, and VoIP can all be included under a single .tel domain name to provide a synergistic approach to your brand communications.

All existing Top Level Domains (e.g. .com, .net, .fr, .mobi…) serve the same purpose: they map domain names to IP addresses and serve as easily memorable identifiers for web sites. A .tel domain name doesn’t use web content and does not use the DNS in this way. The .tel maps domain names to contact information and keywords stored directly in the DNS, enabling companies to use the DNS as a data store.

The point about .tel is that it is a whole new way of using technology that has the potential to grow very fast. As well as listing your business, you could also consider using a .tel for private use. Think of it as a worldwide online Telephone Book that you can control your contact details in. Like a paper telephone book - people can use it for Business and Personal Listings.

A .tel domain allows you to create a personalised or branded online presence without needing to secure hosting, develop web pages or purchase email accounts

.Tel is much quicker than a website.

The .tel system is DNS-based, any.tel takes just a fraction of a second to load, and is much quicker than loading a typical website.

How to navigate within .tel

A .tel directory directs customer to the department of location of their choice using a quick and intuitive navigation structure based on innovative DNS technology.

Telcommerce.biz: Where Business With your.tel Begins

For the last couple of months, the joke around the office has been that dot tel would be extremely useful for “ladies of the evening”.

We just couldn’t come up with a way of marketing to them that didn’t sink us into tawdriness.

Well it looks like we are too late – they have discovered dot tel without our help.

Anyone who is on Twitter has a large number of “working girls” following them. A review of the tweets that Dot Tel Finder aggregates http://www.dottelfinder.com/tweets/ shows two such ladies who believe .tel would be an asset to their business.

Some Googling on this particular demographic of Twitter users shows that they are early adopters of all technologies as their job mandates the need for constant promotion and accessibility.

It seems that any sole proprietorship has the same needs – you have to constantly market yourself in different arenas and be available to clients through a myriad of channels.

So if Twookers have discovered .tel , why haven’t you?

.tel is a publishing platform, focused on connecting people with other people or businesses. So really, it competes against Web-based directories, limited and fragmented Yellow or White Page solutions, cached and outdated information in search engines and old-fashioned business cards.

.TEL can also be used as a web directory.

.TEL can also be used as a web directory. So, if you’ve registered widgets.tel, you might want to create a front page with folders “red widgets,” “blue widgets” and “green widgets.” Upon clicking “red widgets,” a user can be taken further down another level into “domestic red widgets” and “international red widgets,” and when choosing one of those two options, they can be presented with a list of geographical storefronts that offer that product for sale.

Keywords administraton within .tel: More keyword space

You are now able to add keywords up to 2000 charactes within one window.

(You won't have to split/devide the text anymore, into various windows, and the text won't get mixed up anymore...)

A better way, now, to manage your data within .tel

For managing your data on the web interface, there are a few new useful extensions:

For example, you can copy or move data from one folder in a othe folder, more easily.

To do this, you simply select your data via the check-box.

Then you select a function via the selection "actions".

When you copy or move the data, you will receive a list of the domains, from which your are able to choose/select from.

Furthermore, you are able to write new contact information direct in the existing profiles.

You can switch to this option within the specific dialog.

Managing your private contact information within .tel

You now have the possibility to mark your private data within your subdomains as private.
Up and till now, one was only able to do this on the interface of the main .tel domain.

You are now able to structure a .tel domain for your whole familiy.

To see a example, go to: http://www.allmich.tel/

The advantage of this is, that one can define for a each member of the family his own
subdomain:

Every family member will therefor have his private data in one of these subdomains:

Usually, there are personal mobile phone numbers, email addresses and chat contact information, that one does not necessarily want to show to the public.

However, with this new system, one is able to structure private contact information in a new way, and more clearly arranged, respectively, more clearly laid out.

How can I analyze my .tel?

Available stats programms for .tel:

1.) TEL-MACHINE.com:

You can now use the following functions:

* .tel Domain Visitor statistics analysis example
* automatic Twitter posts on .tel pages
* copying and migration of content between .tel pages
* backup and restore for .tel pages
* managing several domains under one account

2.) ".tel Stats Analyzer Program v1.10", für Windows und Mac OSX.

How do I advertise within my .tel domain?

Please take note:

Up and till now, there seems not to exist a adaptation / adjustment of the web interface of a provider.
This does mean, that you, as an end user, are not able to advertise witin your .tel, up and till now.

Neverthe less, I suggest, that you get started, and read all the instructions, and get familiar with the tasks...:

Basically, the structure of your add looks like this:

* Position/Location of your add (top, right, below)
* Sort Sequence
* Title (max. 255 characters for the title within the add)
* Label (Is used as linktext for the linking, and will be used as last line within the add)
* Link (Link leading to the adverted product)
* Text Content

How to integrate your .tel into your website with JavaScript (without having a Google map)

Mind you, with this easy solution, you won't have a google map, but nevertheless, it is worth having a shot.

Here are the steps:

2.) Replace "jepaa.tel" by your own .tel domain name, and your are done!

Other solutions:
- The DNS version is not working properly (with Google map for navigating)

DotTel ( .tel ) Tips for Your Twitter Account

Adding your Twitter.com account seems like it should be a simple thing to do. DotTel has already incorperated many of the messaging and social networking links including skype, google chat, msn chat, ICQ, AIM, Jabber, and many SMS protocols. What befuddled me was that I could not get my DotTel manager to input my Twitter address without throwing an “invalid url” error.
While on Twitter I realized that other DotTel folks had indeed already posted their Twitter address on their DotTel. OK, so I could see that it was possible, but how did they do it…
I tried quotes around the url, no luck. I then tried single quotes, still no luck . I tried inputting it as a secure page, which it allowed. BUT, the secure page only took my browser to a horrid warning page about the evils of connecting to a non-secure page (my twitter url) and it scared even me.
So a bit more trial and error and VOILA!
It seems that DotTel must expect a php, htm, html,js or some similar familiar “approved web page ending”. Since our twitter account address simply ends with our user name it was never going to let me post JUST THAT. The secret that i stumbled upon (hey, another social network) was to simply place a space after my url and then all was accepted by the DotTel manager and I was happy too.
Hopefully this will rescue you if you want to post your twitter account to your DotTel page.
If you have any tips please email them or login and post them your self. You can even leave them in the comments section of this post. Thanks for visiting MsDotTel.

.Tel: An Upcoming Technology

According to Telnic, the creators of .tel it is the biggest creation after .com because of the way data is going to be handled, traditionally if you had a domain name, you could create a website around it, but with .tel you can't do that. Well what is the use of a domain around which you cant design your website?
That is the beauty of it, instead of hosting a site, it stores all the information on the Internet backbone itself. So whenever you type www.henri.tel you get data which is not hosted by any server but is contained in the domain name server itself. How can they do this? They have done this by utilizing the NAPTR, TXT & LOC records on the DNS itself. Its a simple and a brilliant solution.

How is it done?

Name Authority Pointer (NAPTR) is the protagonist of our story, after proving its robustness in implementation of VoIP phone calls (when your phone call is routed over the Internet with the help of the protocol ENUM) its back to help us with the implementation of .tel technology. NAPTR allows the publication and management of your business card and ways for us to distinguish between them. That's not the end of what NAPTR can do, it can also allow you to manage different instant messaging and VoIP identities like of Skype, AIM and GTalk. Also updating these records dynamically is possible which allows us to make innumerable changes (at no cost!).
TXT records or the Text Records are the human readable format which is stored in ASCII format and the LOC record allows the user to allow somebody to pinpoint his/her exact location.

Benefits & Questions:

After reading all this, obviously more than a few questions will come in your mind.
The primary question that arises to my mind is Security, is it secure? Yes, it allows you to show your site to people whom you want to show, and you can simply change the data by the user name and the password.

Whom does it replace?:

Yellow pages, and static websites would be hit the hardest as people will refrain from spending money on design, maintenance and hosting simply to show their contact details.
Professional's and small business owners will find it cheap and convenient to use as updating will be free and a vcard can also be attached with it. Cost wise if you go to purchase it right now, you should be ready to pay premium cost as the Sunrise and Landrush bookings are open for registered trademark owners and premium buyers. Once the general bookings begin from 24th March the Telnic CEO has promised cost between $10-20 per year, competing with the existing TLD's.

Let me summarize the benefits of .tel:

Bringing together of all means of communication including social media, IM, VoIP, Cell phone and landline numbers.
Protection of Private data via authorization to viewership, and full ownership of your data.
Very suitable for Mobile phone browsing because of the simple nature of data, it will be lightening fast and easy to use.
Multiple languages.
Ecommerce will take a new face with the advent of this, as a generic .tel domain name could host various users under it ex. hospital.tel could give you a list of hospitals registered under that domain, which can be then navigated using sub-domains for each user.
Internet data collection methods could change drastically using .tel domain, ex. consider voting for a particular brand of your favorite shoe under the domain, www.voteforshoe.tel instead of filling up long and lengthy forms.
Since its an upcoming technology, there are bound to be changes in the way things get implemented, also there will be many more questions related to it, please feel free to email me questions and suggestions. I will try my best to answer any or all of them.

Dot Tel Goes America: dmv.tel: Huge Inventory Of DMV Sites And License Bureaus (click here, to see...)

Mesh Digital Ltd, respectively, Domainmonster.com, is populating its dot tel domain dmv.tel with 2000 subdomains (entries for main dmv offices, and local dmv offices). Two minutes, for each entry. "Looking for freelancer"/"go to the telnic website, to learn about the dot tel domain".
"Budget $75".

An Interesting Experiment: WHOIS crossed with DNS (.tel Domains and Network Solutions)

The most interesting (and useful) difference between .tel and other gTLD's (generic top-level domains) is in the DNS. From the Telnic FAQ, "...the value of a .tel domain lies with the ability to host personal (or corporate) contact information directly in the DNS, which can then be universally accessible. This stands in contrast to the typical use of the DNS for other TLDs, in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses."

1 - Why This is Useful

Storing contact information in the DNS enables developers to write code which can query these custom .tel DNS records to gather and store information about you, your connections, family, or friends. For example, instead of managing a set of virtual business cards, software can simply map an individual or business to a .tel domain. When a user needs to look-up the email address or phone number of an individual or business, the software can simply run a DNS query against a .tel to retrieve the latest contact information. For example, if all of my friends know that my .tel domain is kolich.tel, their digital Rolodexes can stay current by querying kolich.tel. If my email address changes, I only have to update my .tel information in once place, instead of pinging each friend individually to alert them of the change.

2 - Getting Started

When you purchase a .tel domain from a registrar, like Network Solutions, the registrar will create an account for you on their .tel information management portal. This portal is used to manage the contact information available through your .tel domain. Here's a screen shot of my kolich.tel management control panel from Network Solutions. Note that no knowledge or understanding of DNS is required to own or maintain a .tel domain. All you need to do is login, determine what information you want to share, and your registrar and Telnic will do the rest.

3 - How It Works

Be warned, you cannot host your own web-site under a .tel domain. However, you can add custom MX records to your .tel which allow you to redirect email from your .tel to your service provider of choice. From the record types page on telnic.org, "...compared to traditional top-level domains, the .tel DNS uses a different set of record types. User-specified Address and CNAME records are prohibited, and the following are allowed:

* TXT - text record for storing keywords and other freeform text.
* LOC - location records containing latitude, longitude and altitude data.
* NAPTR (Naming Authority Pointer Record) - a record holding a URL and an Enumservice that indicates the type of URL information, such as email or phone number."

In other words, the contact information you provided through your registrars .tel control panel is embedded inside of these DNS records. This is the true power of a .tel domain.

I wanted to prove to myself that this really does work, so I used dig to verify that my own .tel information is correct. Here's an example of using dig to query my kolich.tel NAPTR record against OpenDNS:

(web@skull)/> dig @208.67.222.222 kolich.tel NAPTR

Yep, no surprise, my TXT record also matches the information I shared on http://kolich.tel.

4 - Conclusion

In general, I'm quite impressed with the .tel concept. It's clearly an innovative and unique way to let folks stay in touch with one another using some relatively unexplored features of DNS. For the most part, I'd describe .tel as a cross between a typical DNS and WHOIS query. Unfortunately, .tel won't be as useful as I'd like until more users and software platforms adopt it as an information-sharing standard. Given the abundance of free social networking services, it may be hard to convince most users to pay an annual fee to keep their contact information online. However, if a large online player like Google begins to adopt .tel as a standard in many of its services, .tel domains could become valuable and useful tools. Until then, see you at kolich.tel.

How would I use a .tel?

Once you register a .tel domain, you can start to configure your contact details. Details include telephone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses, postal addresses, instant messenger IDs, social networking IDs, gamer tags, website addresses and location (longitude, lattitude) data. All of this data can be configure to be either public or private.

With your data populated, your friends, family or business contacts are then able to access your data. For example visiting your .tel in a web browser will display an interface containing your data. If the user has one of the many .tel address book applications installed on their mobile device they can also instantly retrieve your data. This way, they need only ever know your .tel domain name in order to always have your up-to-date information available to them.

Boldly Go Where No Domainer Has Gone Before

Not a week goes by that I don’t get at least one email from a reader saying, “I wish I got involved in Domaining just a few years earlier – I think I’ve missed the boat.” When I get these emails I immediately respond by saying, “not only have you not missed the boat, this boat doesn’t even have an engine yet!” Let’s face it, we are at the very beginning of an industry that is going to grow tremendously over the next ten years.

I think a lot of this negativity or lack of faith comes from new Domainers that are focused entirely on .com investments. Yes – the Domaining industry got its start with .com but unless you got in early or are sitting on a mountain of cash this is a hard game to break-into. This leaves many new Domainers discouraged because they feel that all the good domain names are taken. Nothing could be further from the truth!

So if you just started in this industry you’ll have to get-over your .com woes and realize that there’s a whole Domaining world out there – and its not all .com! There are some incredible opportunities to buy domains in a number of different TLD’s and at a *very* low price given the current market. Rick Schwartz had a great post a while ago where he said that we are now experiencing a brief period of incredible opportunity, and once this period ends the deals will not be coming back.

Given the slowdown in the global economy domain names are being sold at outrageously low prices making this a buyers market that many will dream of five year from now. Not only are there incredible deals to be had, but there is still uncharted territory to explore. Think of some of the early investors to buy LLL.com domains. Many of these new investors didn’t know what the value would be, but they took a calculated risk and many made a small fortune on their investments. Rick Silver made a run on the .ca TLD and has created a Domaining empire for himself. The idea here is simple – people took a market where it looked like all the good domains were taken, and they forged their own path – this is the true definition of a visionary. Rick Schwartz was a visionary when he bought .com domains in the 90’s and you could be a visionary by thinking outside of the box and daring to forge a new path.

I have been very systematically registering domains in over 20 different ccTLD’s – these domains were just sitting there, waiting to be discovered. I’m not looking to buy any .com’s right now, instead I’m looking at TLD’s like .fm, .tv, and .in. So don’t miss the Domaining boat, forge your own path, and boldly go where no Domainer has gone before!
